This was crazy fun. Rocked up to Sweetdram's Edinburgh distillery with Half Formed Things to play a song from our debut album. Engineered by Marc Freeman, with lighting design and operation by Sam Jones, and I mixed the audio in addition to my usual drum-whacking duties. Felt weirdly "normal". Had the pleasure of playing Wide Days 2020, this year in a virtual conference form, with Kapil Seshasayee. This involved playing a live set of new and old songs in the stunning Leith Theatre: an incredible, albeit slightly surreal, experience. The Gharial, which we played live for the very first time with no rehearsal whatsoever(?!), is available on YouTube.
The latest single from Kapil Seshasayee's forthcoming studio album is out now. Production, engineering, mixing, mastering and drumming from myself. This song is a cracker, and will be so much fun to play live (if gigs ever actually happen again). "The Pink Mirror” is a sonic essay on censorship and dissonance within LGBT representation in Bollywood cinema. While antiquated portrayals of LGBT caricatures continue to serve as little more than comedic relief in mainstream Indian cinema, attempts by LGBT film makers to tell their own stories are often blocked from release (the song is named after a Hindi film by queer film maker Sridhar Rangayan, which was banned by the Indian Censor Board). "The Pink Mirror" highlights the prevalence of problematic narratives in modern Bollywood films, which includes transphobic portrayals of trans characters as villains trying to deceive other characters through seduction.
Kapil's new single "The Gharial", the latest from his forthcoming album "Laal" that we're both working on, is out now. Premiered via Rolling Stone India, and already spun on the radio by BBC Scotland's Vic Galloway and BBC Asian Network's Bobby Friction, it's a wiry trap-infused banger that was great fun to work on. I recorded, mixed, mastered and co-produced the song. Check it out now, and keep your eyes peeled for some commissioned remixes dropping soon. This was a fun project to work on. A sample collage piece by UK producer Sunrise, themed around global climate change concerns, that I mixed and mastered earlier in the year. Working with samples, and thinking in terms of texture and colour, is a liberating and mind-expanding exercise for any engineer. Pleasure to have been involved. It's available for download now, with an accompanying video pieced together by Sunrise in a similar fashion to the song's production process. Just back from Kapil's 8-night UK tour, and extremely chuffed to see that his new single 'The Item Girl' has been launched via Rolling Stone India. I handled the engineering, mixing, drumming and additional production, and it was an extremely fun record to be involved in making. Kapil's second album is going to be a blinder.
I'll be out on the road with Kapil Seshasayee for a UK-wide tour in October, in support of his forthcoming single 'The Item Girl', which is out on October 18th on Loner Noise. I also had the great pleasure of recording, mixing and drumming on the song.

I recorded, mixed and mastered the debut EP from Edinburgh folk duo Weird Cousins, as well as co-producing it with Morgan Hosking. Recorded live around a single Neumann U87, and mixed only with a lightly-applied multiband compressor, it's an intimate and hushed record of touchingly vulnerable songs. Really proud to have been involved in capturing such beautiful music. Out now via Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes etc.
The debut album from my band Half Formed Things is now available to buy on vinyl, CD and download, and to stream via Spotify etc. I handled both the production and drumming on the album: a really massive project, but one that was incredibly rewarding. We're so proud of the results.
Buy the album here. Kapil's BBC Introducing live session for Vic Galloway is now online. We had a great day down at the BBC studios making this happen, and the response has already been incredibly powerful. Cheers, Vic! Get the album here. |
